During a pandemic self isolation is the best prevention along with frequent hand washing. But being stuck inside for long periods can be difficult. Cheer up! There is a way to get out and explore this fair land of ours without risking that dreaded disease.
I’m not an advocate of travel by recreational vehicle but this seems to be the best way to get “On the road again”. My wife cured me of any ideas of buying a recreational vehicle early on in our marriage. She simply refused to sleep anywhere but in motels or hotels as we drove across the country. We even ended up sleeping in our car when we couldn’t find an available motel one night in northern Michigan. But I digress.
The attraction of RV’s during this pandemic is that you can sleep in the same bed every night. Also, you can cook and eat in, saving both on the cost of food and reducing the danger associated with dining out. And take out is a natural with RV’s.
I admit up front that I have not experienced the life of an RVer. So, forgive me dear reader if I make the odd blunder.
There are some drawbacks of course. Most RV’s are expensive in terms of running costs. Ownership or rental of an RV is also expensive. However, if you compare it with hotels and motels that are modern and offers the same degree of luxury the cost per night may not differ too greatly. Like any sunk cost the purchase of an RV can be spread over the days or nights in use. The more you travel the lower the daily cost due to depreciation. You also have maintenance, operating and parking costs which go up with increased travel. And then there is the problem of finding suitable pad space as thousands of other recreational vehicles hit the open road.
Large motor homes can be a problem for the average driver. They may require licensing and experience driving trucks or buses which the new RVer does not possess. In fact, if you want one of these behemoths look for a vehicle one or two years old which is much less expensive because the original owners found they could not manage it.
But the call of the open road beckons. You most likely will have to stay within Canada during this time when foreign travel is being discouraged. As I understand it you can go by vehicle to the US but will be required to quarantine for two weeks on return. Still given the greater outbreaks of Covid-19 in the US this may not be a wise course of action. Always check on travel restrictions before you depart. Nevertheless, there are lots of places to explore in Canada before the cold weather precludes such adventures. Good RV-ING to you.
